As part of the Bologna Process, all programs are currently undergoing changes that will allow students to take Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Starting with the winter semester 2009/2010, studying towards a Bachelor’s degree will be the norm. What are known as “Staatsexamen programs,” such as law, teaching and medical degrees, will remain the exception, as will theological subjects that lead up to an ecclesiastical exam. The traditional Diploma and Magister Artium (M.A.) programs will nonetheless still be available at Bavarian Universities for some time. A list of all bachelor´s and master´s degree programs offered in Bavaria is available at http://www.ba-ma.bayern.de
Thanks to the new Bachelor’s (3 years) and Master’s (an additional 2 years) degrees, study times are shorter, a first qualifying degree will be earned earlier, degrees are more attuned to international demands, and mobility will be increased.
The degree programs are modular, i. e., they are structured in clearly defined units that can be combined and transferred; credit points are awarded for all courses that a student has passed or completed. These accrue until the student has acquired enough credits to have completed the qualification requirement. If you attend another university, whether at home or abroad, the modules and credit points transfer along with you. A degree from a Bavarian University also makes going abroad easy: along with your diploma, you will receive a diploma supplement in German and English that explains your qualifications in detail.
