A wide range of traditional degree courses leading up to the German “Diplomprüfung” (academic diploma in natural sciences, social sciences or economics, equivalent to a MSc), “Magister Artium” or “Staatsprüfung” (university degree required for certain professions) is continually being extended to include new BA and MA programs as part of the process of internationalization. The commitment to the stringent requirements of university studies in the sciences remains the yardstick for this reform. The University of Augsburg has an especially intensive network of contacts in the “Elitenetzwerk Bayern” (Elite Network of Bavaria) to thank for this commitment: The University of Augsburg participates in 11 of the 32 courses of study of this state-wide elite program, and is in charge of 4 of them. The restructuring to include the new Bachelor and Master programs is scheduled for 2008/09. Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are already available in the business and economic courses of study, with an orientation to the information sciences. They are also available in the liberal arts and social sciences (“European Cultural History”, “Media and Communication”), as well as in Economic Mathematics, Material Sciences and Information Sciences. The “German-French Management” program leads to degrees from both the University of Augsburg and the University of Rennes. The course in “Law and Economics” offers an alternative to a legal state examination that is in line with demand in the form of a university degree in law.
The University of Augsburg’s leading position in Germany in the area of further education in the sciences for professionals is undisputed. The selection of courses offered ranges from a series of courses for managers to qualifying programs all the way through to full MBA courses (e.g., “Company Management” or “Rating Analyst”).
