Bavarian universities act as an important stimulus for innovation and progress. Both research and teaching are in a dynamic process of modernization and globalization. You will find more and more of the internationally recognized Bachelor and Master degrees in addition to a wide selection of German (and other) language courses as well as lectures and seminars held in English. EU educational programs such as ERASMUS and numerous cooperations with other universities promote the international exchange of students and teaching staff.

 

The Bavarian university landscape is efficient, diverse and sophisticated, consisting of nine state Universitäten (Universities on the traditional model), 17 state Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences), five state Kunsthochschulen (Academies of Arts) and a range of other institutions of higher education run by municipal, church and private organizations. Whereas the Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences) as “institutions of higher education for working life” offer degree programs that are closely attuned to the demands of careers in business, technology, and social work, the Universitäten, the traditional universities, focus more strongly on academic training. The Kunsthochschulen concern themselves with the arts in their pure (music, theater and the fine arts) and applied (graphics and design) forms, or as film, radio and television.
