To further shape its profile as a university which focuses on engineering and at the same time features the social sciences, the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich combines research fields from different faculties under a single heading to define a common focus: security. With a comprehensive and interdisciplinary concept of security as a field of study, the University is establishing itself in an area of research that is gaining increasing importance in all different areas of society. This includes research areas such as systems security for the Galileo project, reliability in nanoscience, the allocation of infrastructure to risk categories, the safe storage of data inventories over long periods of time, and the social science- based evaluation of a lack of security in modern society.
The faculties of the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich offer a large spectrum of work and collaborative work options to academics. Basic and application-related research are of equal importance here. As a member of numerous research associations and through its partnerships with other universities, the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich has become integrated into the national and international research community and gained widespread recognition among sister institutions. Its research environment is exemplary. Excellent research opportunities – reflected, for example, in the high technical standard of the laboratories – attract internationally acknowledged scientists to accept university chairs at Neubiberg. One of the University’s main concerns is to promote young academics. Just like the state universities, the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich educates junior scientists, helping them on their way towards obtaining their doctoral degrees and their postdoctoral lecturing qualifications – an option that is also open to civilian students.
