The University is a large, modern organization with more than 12,000 employees. Numerous partnership projects between industries and the University facilitate the transfer of practice-oriented research results. This guarantees that new developments in the University’s internationally recognized areas of expertise move quickly from the R & D phase to practical implementation. This applies primarily to developments in molecular biomedicine and medical technology, the development of tailor-made materials and efficient production processing, the basis of the rapidly growing sciences of electronics and information technology, as well as optics and optical technology.
The Max Planck research group for optics, information and photonics in Erlangen together with the “International Max Planck Research School for Optics and Imaging” are exemplary in this respect. They are supported by reliable partnerships with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits and Siemens Medical Solutions. In nine DFG collaborative research centers and seven DFG research units, research concentrates on bio-medical and technical subjects. Six research training groups for outstanding young scholars are pursuing research in fields that range from cultural transfer in the Middle Ages to the development of new high-temperature materials.
