With a population of only 50,000 inhabitants, Passau is greatly influenced by the presence of the university. The student body, more than 9,000 students, lends the town a lively profile. Several halls of residence as well as a stable private housing market provide affordable accommodations.
The fact that the university campus lies just outside the Old Town has contributed greatly to its integration into the community, and the diverse range of cultural activities on offer along with the numerous opportunities for leisure and sports activities enable newcomers to settle in quickly. The University of Passau has always maintained close ties to business both in the immediate region and beyond. The activities of the Neuburg Discussion Forum for Science and Praxis are an excellent example of the fruitful partnership between business and the university.
And although geographically Passau is somewhat out of the way, it is nevertheless a beautiful town that serves as an ideal home base for trips to the Bavarian Forest and to neighboring Austria and the Czech Republic.
