The appeal of the University of Regensburg is enhanced by the attractiveness of the city and its pleasant surroundings, as well as the proximity of the Danube Valley and the Bavarian Forest. The medieval Stone Bridge spanning the Danube and the Gothic Cathedral are the emblems of this city of 150,000 inhabitants. In July 2006, Regensburg was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Yet Regensburg does not rely on its 2,000 years of cultural history alone for its fine reputation. It is a prosperous economic center with one of the highest productivity rates in all of Germany. The University has contributed greatly to this success.
Thanks to the careful renovation of the Old Town and intelligent transportation planning, the city center is a vibrant, lively place where people live, work, shop, and go out. Regensburg boasts a great number of sidewalk cafés, restaurants, and pubs catering to a broad variety of tastes. Its music and cultural festivals attract thousands of visitors throughout the year.
All of the University’s facilities and buildings are within walking distance of each other on a campus set in a landscaped park, a perfect environment for study and research. The city’s public transport system connects the University with the city center and other parts of town.
